20:05:22 <wilcal> Welcome all to this weeks qa meeting
20:05:31 <rindolf> wilcal: hi
20:05:37 <wilcal> Hi rin
20:05:37 <rindolf> hi all
20:05:41 <wilcal> #topic Who's new?
20:05:51 <wilcal> Anyone new here today/tonight
20:06:00 <DavidWHodgins> HiYa. Good thing I had konversation on. I was thinking today was Wednesday. :-)
20:06:10 <wilcal> Hello David
20:06:20 <wilcal> #chair DavidWHodgins
20:06:20 <Inigo_Montoya`> Current chairs: DavidWHodgins lewyssmith wilcal
20:06:20 <lewyssmith> If this is your first QA IRC meeting - please do speak up!
20:06:28 <wilcal> take if from here David :-))
20:06:56 <DavidWHodgins> #topic Mageia 6 sta2 - How's it going?
20:07:13 <lewyssmith> Gone, I would say.
20:07:14 <DavidWHodgins> So have people been trying it out more, or taking a break?
20:07:16 <wilcal> IMO those ISO's are golden
20:07:25 <wilcal> very good job by everyone
20:07:30 <wilcal> all are very usable
20:07:43 <wilcal> Great starting point
20:07:44 <brian__> I just did an install today. Seems okay. Very large update afterward
20:07:44 <DavidWHodgins> Absolutely. Congrats everyone!
20:07:56 <lewyssmith> Is there yet any public feedback, or indication of downloads?
20:08:02 <wilcal> Ya distructive update for me :-(
20:08:03 <DavidWHodgins> Yeah. KDE update was pushed shortly after iso release
20:08:25 <wilcal> over 500 new files in the repo in 2 days
20:08:36 <brian__> after the update - I'm back up on this intel box
20:08:48 <brian__> had spotty behavior right before on plasma
20:08:50 <wilcal> ya repo is still shaking this morning
20:08:52 <DavidWHodgins> ktorrent has dropped off a lot. I currently only have one downloader in Portuagal
20:09:00 <lewyssmith> I noticed a few regressions post-ISO.
20:09:15 <wilcal> failed net install yesterday
20:09:39 <wilcal> today M6 Plasma x86_64 LiveDVD install and update went ok
20:10:17 <DavidWHodgins> net installs with cauldron are always iffy. Have to monitor https://pkgsubmit.mageia.org/
20:10:18 <[mbot> [ Build system status ]
20:10:35 <wilcal> And along comes a completely new and funky bug:
20:10:36 <wilcal> https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20433
20:10:37 <[mbot> Bug 20433: normal, Normal, kde, NEW , Plasma desktop icons look like selected even if not, after being overflown by the pointer
20:10:40 <DavidWHodgins> When large updates have are recent, it takes time for the mirrors to sync
20:10:45 <wilcal> strange thing
20:10:53 <lewyssmith> brian__: I did not understand your last comment.
20:10:57 <DavidWHodgins> Saw that. Haven't tried to recreate it here
20:11:19 <lewyssmith> Saw it.
20:11:20 <wilcal> Easy to create. Install M6 plasma and update
20:11:53 <DavidWHodgins> lewyssmith: When there's a large update, like all of kde, it takes time for the package builds to complete, and the mirrors to sync. If a mirror syncs in the middle, it can have inconsistent dependencies until the mirror syncs again
20:12:10 <brian__> :lewyssmith - started having graphics issues before the update. AFterwards it was clean
20:12:18 <lewyssmith> Good.
20:12:24 <wilcal> By the weekend things should be settled down right?
20:12:51 <lewyssmith> DavidWHodgins: Did not understand ypur last comment to me, either!
20:12:52 <DavidWHodgins> Typically about 12 hours, though sometimes it takes 24 after a large updte
20:13:26 <wilcal> This was a jumbo update :-))
20:13:41 <DavidWHodgins> For example, mirror gets new task-kde with a new dependency, but not the package that is required by the dependency. Install of task-kde will fail
20:13:58 <lewyssmith> I naturally use the coffee mirror, the most reliable normally.
20:14:17 <wilcal> We're getting close though
20:14:20 <DavidWHodgins> Yep
20:14:44 <lewyssmith> Do STA2 triallers have the sens to update their installe dsystem?
20:14:46 <wilcal> Remember the days of "Good Luck"?
20:15:21 <DavidWHodgins> Just want to remind everyone, that while the primary task of iso testing for the qa team is the pre-release testing, we should continue additional tests (for non-blocker issues) post-release
20:15:31 <wilcal> We still have the bad nvidia/proprietary driver issue(s)
20:15:45 <lewyssmith> Question: how long do we have befoe the next phase (RC?) is started? Not too soon, I hope.
20:16:00 <DavidWHodgins> Hopefully the driver issues will get sorted soon
20:16:22 <lewyssmith> They are hte major blockers.
20:16:22 <wilcal> It's the one major issue left I think
20:16:36 <DavidWHodgins> That will have to be a council decision, mainly needing feedback from packagers first
20:17:10 <lewyssmith> We should allow a +- month, I think.
20:17:27 <wilcal> https://bugs.mageia.org/buglist.cgi?bug_status=NEW&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=VERIFIED&priority=release_blocker&product=Mageia&query_format=advanced&version=Cauldron&order=assigned_to%2Cbug_id%20DESC&query_based_on=release_blocker&list_id=74501
20:17:33 <wilcal> Blockers
20:17:39 <DavidWHodgins> Once we get into release freeze, no package updates will be allowed, unless it's to fix a known existing bug, or a security fix
20:18:41 <wilcal> I think the plan was to EOL M5 3-months after the release of M6
20:19:25 <lewyssmith> Which makes testing *upgrading* very important.
20:20:25 <wilcal> What's the page defining how to test upgrading?
20:20:36 <brian__> I'll give it a whirl - a few upgrades
20:21:09 <lewyssmith> wilcal: In the 2nd ISO testing wiki page.
20:21:55 <lewyssmith> The bore is having to preserve the original M5 setup to restore for repeated tests.
20:22:13 <lewyssmith> Easy with VMs.
20:22:56 <wilcal> Vbox helps a lot with this
20:23:14 <lewyssmith> Bill, I do not have the agenda. Dave has disappeared for the moment. do you want to advance the topic?
20:23:45 <wilcal> lets move on
20:23:54 <wilcal> #topic Testing Updates & Backports
20:24:31 <lewyssmith> I have not dared to look at updates with so much M6 testing, but have had a bellyfull of that; so will go back to them.
20:24:42 <wilcal> I'll work the wireshark thingy in the next day or so
20:24:54 <wilcal> List is managable
20:25:17 <lewyssmith> Better than I feared.
20:25:28 <wilcal> if you take out the greyed out bugs it's pretty short
20:25:46 <wilcal> anyone see anything there that's a problem
20:25:51 <wilcal> Hi ya tj
20:25:55 <lewyssmith> Hello TJ.
20:26:19 <tjandrews> Hi. Sorry I'm late. Had to help a brother split some wood.
20:26:34 <brian__> TJ
20:26:45 <lewyssmith> wilcal: A quick look, nothing at first sight off-putting. some unkowns, though.
20:26:49 <rindolf> tjandrews: hi
20:28:03 <wilcal> fwiw if you wanna have a little fun take wireshark installed on your laptop to your library or coffee shop. It's interesting to watch
20:29:22 <wilcal> so poke at one of your choice and lets keep the list under control
20:29:39 <lewyssmith> -2 If you understand what you see...
20:29:47 <brian__> I need to try it sometime
20:30:01 <wilcal> or just tinker with something you don't understand
20:30:11 <lewyssmith> Normal!
20:30:34 <wilcal> teacher at school told me we teach you enough to recognize things you don't know anything about :-))
20:30:57 <lewyssmith> i.e. most things.
20:31:18 <wilcal> move'n on
20:31:20 <wilcal> #topic Security Roundup
20:31:35 <lewyssmith> ping Luigi12
20:31:44 <wilcal> Luigi is still moving bugs but is rarely here
20:32:11 <brian__> amazing how work gets int eh way ;-)
20:32:14 <wilcal> lets move on and linger for David to return
20:32:15 <lewyssmith> Luigi12: In case you see the logs - Hello David, hope things are OK with you.
20:32:27 <wilcal> same here
20:32:29 <wilcal> #topic Anything Else?
20:32:48 <lewyssmith> Not from me.
20:33:07 <wilcal> Just wanted to mention that at last weeks Southern California Linux Expo that about half the booths had something Raspberry Pi
20:33:43 <wilcal> I have two Pi's on my LAN here both connected to my Mageia boxes in some way
20:33:49 <wilcal> that's a big trend
20:34:09 <lewyssmith> A computer wizzo friend told me recently how cheap they are; and showed me how small.
20:34:21 <wilcal> Stacked Pi's is also a big trend
20:34:23 <lewyssmith> wilcal: What OS?
20:34:33 <wilcal> debian at its heart
20:34:40 <wilcal> uses the debian repo
20:34:47 <brian__> raspian then?
20:34:49 <wilcal> $35 and extremely powerful
20:35:21 <wilcal> next jump in Pi technology will make it a real competitor and way more then a Toy
20:35:35 <wilcal> Yes raspian
20:35:40 <lewyssmith> A recent ML comment implied that up to now they were difficult to Mageia, but a recent architectural change has made them more accessible.
20:36:00 <wilcal> I have a dedicated Pi with OSMC/Kodi on it. Very very impressive
20:36:14 <lewyssmith> OSMC?
20:36:35 <wilcal> https://osmc.tv/
20:36:36 <[mbot> [ OSMC ]
20:36:58 <lewyssmith> My friend uses his in a home TV setup.
20:37:12 <wilcal> So this server also service multimedia files and the Pi plays them on my HDTV
20:37:17 <wilcal> very impressive.
20:37:27 <lewyssmith> At any rate, we can quizz *you* about them!
20:37:53 <wilcal> Short meeting I think. Anything else
20:38:13 <lewyssmith> Raspbery Pi is not the only one of its ilk, but you never hear of the others.
20:38:44 <lewyssmith> I hazd a fiend who had one of the others with RiscOS, and was delighted with it.
20:39:03 <wilcal> That's because the Pi is overwhelming its "competition"
20:39:18 <tjandrews> A fiend? I try to avoid those.
20:39:18 <lewyssmith> The competition came afte Pi.
20:39:26 <tjandrews> ;)
20:39:35 <wilcal> There are some very good sub $100 intel mini boards
20:39:57 <wilcal> But the Pi is shipping in the 10's of millions
20:40:18 <lewyssmith> Really?
20:40:24 <wilcal> there was a promise of Mageia on Pi but that is still a work in progress
20:40:43 <lewyssmith> On Arm, more striclty. But which Arm?
20:40:46 <wilcal> people are adopting it for many uses
20:41:05 <wilcal> Digital Signage is one use
20:41:27 <Benmc> (made it)
20:41:35 <wilcal> btw I run it from an external battery for a smartphone
20:41:45 <tjandrews> Hi, Ben.
20:41:50 <wilcal> hello ben
20:41:51 <lewyssmith> Hello Ben. We are just finishing - really.
20:41:59 <wilcal> anything you wanna add?
20:42:17 <lewyssmith> = want to add?
20:42:51 <Benmc> Ill need to read back, but nothing at present
20:42:56 <wilcal> in short the new M6 isos are very usable, the repo is still settling down from all the updates after the release of sta2
20:43:13 <wilcal> do give them a try
20:43:27 <lewyssmith> He has been - more than most.
20:43:42 <Benmc> cinnamon filemanager has a terminal window at the top of the window...
20:44:07 <lewyssmith> Have not noticed that.
20:44:14 <Benmc> thuis is in a cinnamon + gnome install
20:44:51 <lewyssmith> I ran through *everything* with Cinnamon from the ISO. But updates have been sometimes retrogressive.
20:45:44 <lewyssmith> Will try it tomorrow.
20:45:57 <wilcal> There's been over 500 new files in the M6 repo just in the last couple days and it's still shake'n a little
20:46:13 <Benmc> I was needing to do something in Gnome terminal that I was unable to, so I added task-cinnamon, rebooted into cinnamon
20:46:14 <wilcal> So by the weekend it should be settled down
20:46:48 <wilcal> The XFCE isos are golden
20:47:14 <lewyssmith> Do we know the reeaction from the public?
20:47:19 <wilcal> I'm probably gonna shift my laptop to XFCE
20:47:20 <Benmc> on a side note, some comments on youtube are dissing Mageia as a distro, and sta2 particularly
20:47:38 <lewyssmith> dissing?
20:47:42 <wilcal> anything specific
20:48:15 <lewyssmith> Benmc: Guess 'dismissing'.
20:48:36 <Benmc> I was reading yeaterday, Ill see if I can find the link
20:48:41 <Benmc> lewis, yes
20:48:49 <wilcal> The isos install and run just fine. If you updated them right away then you'd have run into trouble
20:49:06 <wilcal> should settle down in a day or so
20:49:12 <tjandrews> That's what happened to me yesterday.
20:49:49 <wilcal> For me I thing Tuesday was the day after and if you updated an M6 install it crashed and burned
20:49:55 <wilcal> today was much better
20:50:21 <tjandrews> Updates on established systems have been less trouble. For me, anyway.
20:50:40 <Benmc> sorry, cant find, but poster is Frederic Bezies
20:50:45 <lewyssmith> Anyhow, I am off. Thanks to those who came, to Bill for holding the baby. Goodbye all.
20:51:02 <wilcal> We're done. Thanks all for coming keep poking away
20:51:11 <wilcal> Count down
20:51:13 <wilcal> T-5
20:51:23 <wilcal> T-4
20:51:29 <wilcal> T-3
